1 Church House TotlandA spectacular conversion of the former Totland Bay Methodist Church, this property has been named by The Times as one of the best 50 holiday cottages in Britain. The church dates from 1875, with an extension built in 1905, and was erected as a memorial to Mary Toms and William Bailey, the first Bible Christian missionaries to visit the Isle of Wight in 1823. Converted only recently 1 Church House retains many of the original features, including a grand front entrance porch, complete with founders’ stones and a glorious arched stained glass window.

Totland holiday cottageThe property has been renovated to a very high standard providing luxurious holiday accommodation for a family or groups of friends. The accommodation stretches across three floors with the main sleeping area on the ground floor, impressive living area on the first floor and romantic master ensuite bedroom on the third level, transformed from the original gallery.

Isle of Wight holiday cottages

Totland lies at the western end of the Isle of Wight. Totland means “tootland” with a “toot” being a lookout so it is no surprise that from here you can readily access the dramatic coastline of Tennyson Down, the famous chalk stacks of the Needles, the coloured sands of Alum Bay and heather clad Headon Warren sprinkled with tumuli. Totland village was built as a luxury resort for the rich and comprises late Victorian and early Edwardian buildings from the top of the Broadway down to the War Memorial. 1 Church House is very conveniently located on The Avenue within a few minutes’ walk of Freshwater and Totland villages which host of broad range of artisan shops, convenience stores and takeaways as well as a butcher, baker and fishmonger within a 5 minute walk. The No.7 and No.12 Southern Vectis bus stops are within easy walking distance  making this holiday accommodation perfect for a car free holiday. Totland Bay is a 10 minute walk and is picture perfect – its turquoise waters are great for swimming and kayaking. The sand and pebble beach is backed by a sea wall, cliffs, and greenery. The beach has a short pier with a popular café (currently being renovated). Beyond the café is an easy walk along the sea wall to Colwell Bay and the sought after beach restaurant. On the eastern end of Totland’s esplanade is a wonderful pub and restaurant with great Mediterranean food and famous for its sunset views.

1 Church House TotlandEnter this Isle of Wight holiday accommodation from the front porch into a grand hallway complete with wooden pew where you can rest and take off your shoes and boots. To the left you will find a characterful spacious bedroom with super king size bed and ensuite shower room and to the right is a similarly characterful bedroom with two single beds and ensuite shower room. Next to this is a large single bedroom. At the rear of the hallway is a bathroom (with bath and over bath shower) and an excellent utility room where you can store bicycles and do your laundry. Head up the stairs and wait for the “wow” as you enter the magnificent living area which stretches the width of the building and shows off the converted church to best effect. 1 Church House TotlandBathed in the light of the magnificent stained glass window you will find an open plan fitted kitchen, comfortable sofas and large dining table. Look up and you will see the beautiful arched and decorated wooden ceiling. Further stairs lead to the master bedroom with super kingsize bed and ensuite shower room. From here you can look over the balustrade to the living area below and if you look through the plain panels within the stained glass window you can see the sea in the distance! There is parking for up to 3 cars out front as well as an outdoor seating area.
